Ladies and gentlemen, honorable judges:
The title of my speech is: Humanism- Master of a Technological City
There is a city in an excessively modernized world; in an exceedingly affluent world; in an extremely dazzling world: factories are equipped with assembly lines of exhaustless energy; vehicles are harnessed with supersonic engines; houses are installed with automatic robots.
What an enchanting city it is! But there seems darkness behind the prosperous technology, because the involvement of citizens, who are city hosts and hostesses, are all invisible, let alone their minds. They are ranked five classes when they were born and are deprived of their thoughts. The ridicule is that people have already got accustomed to their current miserable life and deem it their ultimate pursuit. That is a city described in a Brave New World.
Above is the very depiction in book of Huxley- Brave New World. Actually his book is an irony of the city in a technologically advanced world and implies the extinction of humanism. Ladies and gentlemen, what do you think of humanism?
Tracing back to the age of Renaissance, humanism is a concept that centers on the value of human’s existence and spirits. It is the premise of the life. Thus, such lifeless and meaningless life that is mentioned in the book is beyond our imagination.
In contemporary society, cities are windows of modernization and industrialization. Aristotle once said: “People gather in a city in order to seek a better life add live a better life.” So, it is indispensable to prioritize humanism in city development.
First, humanism, as a city’s root and soul, is the core of civilization. The Ancient City of Lou’lan once thrived in history but soon vanished, because it was rich in properties but fragile in spirits.
Next, humanism acts as an engine to enhance city development. Prominent cities like London, Tokyo, and New York not only have abundant material wealth, but also have sufficient spiritual resources. The prosperity of a city depends not only on its wealth, but also on its radiation of spirits.
Finally, humanism, as a soft power, intermingles with every ordinary member of a city. The slogan of Beijing Olympic Games is “Green Olympics, High-tech Olympics and People’s Olympics.” It expresses the harmony between nature and people, the sustainable economic development for people, the friendship and happiness of people. Living in a city full of the power of humanism is the ever-lasting pursuit of the people.
In a word, fish is to water what humanism is to city. So ladies and gentlemen, if I travelled to the city in Brave New World, I would offer the citizensone word: humanism. Let humanism enlighten and awaken their world, and eventually the sun shines in aReal New World!
Thank you very much!
