中国矿业大学万书君: My View on the Role of Humanism in Today's Technologically Advanced World

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen,

As a language-major student from a university of science and technology, I once wondered whether the science students and the arts students come from different planets, or will they go to different planets?

It seems that the highly advanced technologically world would still move without the arts students. Weather forecasts will still be broadcast every day, the spacecraft will still be launched punctually, and the power plants will still provide electricity. But seemingly all of these won't do without the science students. Our everyday life would be in a mess .So, why do we, students who major in the arts, for instance history, law, press or philosophy exist?

“Can you science geek slow down your pace and take a sniff of the newly blossomed flowers?” I asked one of my friends who majors in telecommunication, and who is always incredibly high-efficient and self-disciplined. “Sniff flowers? How can you guys waste so much time on these entirely illusive things and can you have just a little bit down-to-earth spirit?” For him, humanism contributes nothing to the practical needs of our life, but for me, it shapes the genuine core value of human beings; for him, science can create the delicacies like a magic cook, but for me, it is arts that trigger the desire and stimulate the appetite.

In my university, there are statues of three famous educators standing erect in the spacious square . Almost everyone seeing those statues would complain the anti-aesthetics and de-humanity of the architecture. There are only names of those educators engraved on the statues without any biographical introduction or background information relevant to my university. From those statues, we see no connections between the past and the present, no link between social progress and tertiary education, no dialogue between a university edging on science and technology and an inner motive for the truth, the good, and the beauty. The three statues stand there, abruptly and awkwardly, just like the embarrassing situation the arts subjects face under the present circumstances, in which the fundamental significance of instrumental reason is highly emphasized, and value reason is increasingly gaining its importance, but no one knows exactly how to set the latter in an appropriate place and in a proper way.

Ladies and gentlemen, just a few days ago, a boy in my university decided to donate one of his kidneys to save his dying father. This news is widely broadcast through RenRen. com, a social network, and just within a week, faculties and students in my university have donated more than 400,000 RMB to that family. This time, technology reconnects families, rescues lives, acquits the innocent, provides supporting networks for those in need, and promotes sense of responsibility. This is a perfect combination of humanitarian concern and communication technology, and this is also the way out for the co-existence of humanity and technology.
