"It is a bit uncomfortable to speak in front of a crowd. But, my parents emphasized to me that public speaking is an important skill in life. So I seize every opportunity to train up — from the simple tasks of answering more questions in class, to volunteering as Master of Ceremony in some events. This increased experience helps building up my confidence in public speaking. I do like speaking competitions, as the challenge puts my confidence into real test."

"At first, I only focused on coming up with different ways of presenting my speech. I then debated with myself which one was better and settled on this beginning. It was not my intention to make it original and unique — I just followed what was really the best thing I learnt in school. It turned out to be unique enough because it was based entirely on my own personal interests. Of course, the speech was further improved after trying it out to a number of listeners and getting their feedback."

"Considering the Question-and-Answer section, I guess the key is to say what you really believe, not what you think would sound good. It is quite hard to make something up — the judges can tell. It is also important to take a few extra seconds to organize your answer, especially for the unrelated question. Preparation does help a lot in responding well to questions. I spent a lot of time with my parents brainstorming all possible questions, and then I worked on the answers and rehearsed them thoroughly."

"I was fascinated by the mysterious stars and sky when I was very little. My interest grew when I started reading some reference books borrowed from the school library."

"Many people have wondered is there an end to the Universe? And many have tried, and failed, to find out. I would like to ask the same question when I become an astronomer, but with a slight extension to the question. 'Is there an end to the Universe? And if so, what marks the end?' I already have a few hypotheses."

"I usually read books and watch movies with a lot of dialogue. In books, you can find out more about how you can use English naturally and properly, and pick up some great phrases and vocabularies. In movies, you learn how a speaker delivers his/her message through facial expression and body language — but please try not to read the subtitles."

The Best Thing I Have Learned on Campus

A campus is a place where we find new friends. It is a place where we learn respect. It is a place where we acquire knowledge.

I still remember the days when I was little. I looked up into the sky and thought that it’s just part of the Earth. The Sun, the Moon and the stars belonged to the Earth.  I looked forward to the day I could take a plane to visit these places. But that all changed when I started school.

In school, I learned that the sky we see above our heads every single day is actually special, way beyond my imagination! The Sun is 1.3 million times bigger than our Earth. Our Earth is just a tiny little dot in our solar system. Our solar system is just a tiny little dot in our galaxy. And our galaxy is just a tiny little dot in our Universe. How fascinating!

My curiosity drove me to find some reference books on both astronomy and astrology. The former is the study of stars and planets and their properties, whilst the latter is the study of myths regarding the universe.

My teachers have helped me develop my inquisitive mind, not just to believe and accept what I’m told and what I see, but to check and verify the information.

I want to be an astronomer when I grow up, and discover more of the unlimited expanses of the Universe. And who knows? Maybe the Universe isn’t infinite after all, as everyone thinks. The Universe may just be a tiny little dot in whatever mysteries lie beyond.

Thank you!
