  • Does a picture really tell a thousand words?

Does a picture really tell a thousand words, especially about what's behind the picture? Well, maybe intelligent ones confidently offer a positive answer: “Of course. And that's the power of art. ” However, my answer is the opposite: probably they carry only a simple story.

Puzzled? Not persuaded? Well, let me explain. We're all familiar with the SUNRISE painted by Monet, the famous French painter. People tried to articulate a thousand words that the picture tells across times. But the fact is: Monet woke up very early as usual on that morning in 1872. As he opened the window, he was instantly impressed by the scenery out there. He took his brushes out and finished the SUNRISE within half an hour. So, instead of saying a thousand words, Monet was simply giving a vent to his feelings about the scenery.

The notable painter Da Vinci created a well-known picture MONALISA, a portrait of a graceful woman. Many of us are curious why Da Vinci drew this picture. Some suspect that Da Vinci had an affair with the woman. Others think that it is a picture of Da Vinci himself because he thought the best way of the combination of humanity is hermap-hroditism. So he put himself in a woman’s body. Curiosity increases. If you watchthe picture closely, the woman had no eyebrows and eyelashes. How could this be so

weird? Well, there is no end of pursuit. The fact is again simple. One of his father's friends, a banker, paid him to do the painting for his wife, so he did. With regard to the eyebrows, a scientist has already given the answer. It was because somebody who kept this picture didn’t know how to clean the picture and some parts on the picture had been erased by mistake. The original color of the background is blue but nowadays we can find that the color has turned to dark green. In a word, so many guesses may be based on the mistakes just because the protection was not proper.

A picture may tell a thousand words on the part of viewers, and, this is the charm of art. Yet, it is meaningless and misleading to impose stories of a thousand words on the painter.
