For many students, studying a second language is a significant challenge, and the idea of speaking in front of native speakers is certainly a daunting task.

Imagine then the challenge students face when having to speak in front of not only a large audience filled with their peers, parents and teachers, but also a selected panel of experts in their language field.

This was the reality for the brave students who participated in the 18th Annual China Daily-21st Century English Speaking Competition in Xiaman from March 22-24. As a representative of Navitas English, I was lucky enough to participate as one of the guest judges throughout the three-day competition and I was certainly very impressed with what I saw and heard.

Across Primary School, Junior High School students, Senior High School and College students, students represented the best English language speakers from across mainland China and the region, chosen from regional and provincial rounds and semi-finals.

Overcoming their nerves, each student presented their own perspective on a chosen subject for a rehearsed speech, followed by impromptu talks and random questions from Question Masters. Topics ranged from ‘The person I most admire’ for the junior students, to ‘My view on the Gaokao’ by Senior High School students.

The more advanced college students tackled the challenging and philosophical subject of ‘The road not travelled in life’ in the grand final.

Responses were usually passionate and often genuinely heartfelt and inspiring. Many were simply funny and entertaining. Contestants in the Junior High School category spoke of admiring or being inspired by such diverse figures as Hilary Clinton, Barrack Obama’s brother, Mother Theresa, pop-stars, grandparents and even the local street hawker, who maintains his smile despite his tough life conditions.

The overall champion of the competition, Wu Po-Te from Taiwan, won the judges over with his story of overcoming great odds after suffering injury at the hands of a drunk driver.

Wu Po-te triumphed over 10,104 participants from 789 universities around China in this year's competition. Throughout 11 months, contestants nationwide were whittled down to the final 18 through a series of online, campus and regional rounds.

With so much talent, the process of judging the students was very challenging and I was humbled to be among so many prestigious long serving competition judges, which included professors and lecturers from TESOL centres and universities from China and around the world.

Navitas English has been a proud sponsor of the Annual China Daily-21st Century English Speaking Competition for more than five years with previous champions winning a Navitas English-sponsored study tour to Australia as part of their prizes. This year, three participants were chosen as recipients of the study tour prize.

As someone who has a morbid fear of public speaking, I was amazed at the confidence of some contestants and strongly empathised with those so overcome by nerves that they simply froze for a few moments.

In the end, each student triumphed simply by participating and proving they are the best English speakers in the country.
