演讲稿:

Since early 20th century, human-beings have developed and enhanced a new ability: the ability to name their younger generations. There have been the “Lost Generation” in the 1920’s, “Beat Generation” in the 1940’s, and “X-Generation” in the 1980’s. Chinese people are not lagging behind in this respect: the “Angry Young Man” generation, the “Held-in-arm” generation, the “Kidault” generation. My generation is generally termed as the “post-90 generation”, a generation that is claimed to have no faith. I, however, refuse to be categorized in this way, because I prefer a better name for my generation: the “V-generation”

In the past few years, China has dazzled the whole world by successfully holding the Beijing Olympic Games, Shanghai World Expo, and Guangzhou Asian Games. During the whole process, the V-generation made their striking debut.

First, “V” stands for “volunteer”. As the IOC President, Jacques Rogge once said, “the Olympic games are for volunteers as well as athletes”. In Beijing Olympic games and shanghai world expo, we were the volunteers who welcomed the world with our passion and smiles; in Wenchuan and Yushu earthquakes, we were the voluntary teachers who took care of the kids, bringing them hope and love. During the national parade in 2009, we were the group of people who walked on Tian An’ men square, demonstrating our willingness to contribute to the country. So you see, the voluntarism of our generation is reflected in different aspects of social life. By holding this faith, we show the world a promising China, we show China a new image of our younger generation, more importantly, we show ourselves the potential to change the world for the better.

Second, “V” stands for “versatile”. Though the voluntary work is long and tiring, the young volunteers are full of enthusiasm and talents. In all those international affairs, with proficient foreign language skills, we introduce the foreigners China’s long history and rich civilization; with efficient ability in using digital technology, we demonstrate those exhibitions in a more interesting style; and with diversified performing talents, we spread joy and happiness.

Third, “V” stands for “victory”. With our faith in sacrifice and dedication, we have gained tremendously through all the voluntary works. It helps us boost self-understanding, active participation and creativity both in the sports arena and in everyday life; it helps us build up worldwide friendship and get access to diversified culture; it even helps us to understand and appreciate responsibility in a mature way.

As a young volunteer, I am fully aware of the essence of faith: altruism and responsibility; as a versatile talent, I embrace creativity and passion; as one of the “V-generation”, I have signed up for being a volunteer for the 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games. And I am not alone. I am doing this with 9 million university students who regularly serve in volunteer activities, because we know that without faith, youth will end with spiritual death; with faith, youth is our most valuable wealth.
