Not One Less

My perception of pressure has never become so sharp until an appalling incidence happened just on my own campus: A girl student chose to end her life from the tallest building of my university. The cause was focused on college students’ pressures, study, job, or unpredictable future, which again formidably smashed one’s hope or even one’s life. However, in the other corner of the campus, some students harbor in their dorm, playing PC games fiercely or indulging themselves with various online activities. They seem to live far away from any worry or ideal. Pressure or dream? It’s a question which always pesters us yet never been answered properly.

Luckily, I got the answer from my cousin. Pressure and dream, not one less.

Recently my cousin was recommended as a postgraduate to 301 Military Hospital, a very prestigious medical college. Country born and country bred, he was self-conscious and introverted. However, thrilled by the good news, he talked more during this year’s family reunion. When he was young, he dreamed to become a doctor and pursued the study of cardiovascular disease, the very disease his mother, died of when he was in high school. Thereafter with all the pressures burdened on him from the family, school and money, his pursuit towards his dream became even harder. He took the college entrance examination for three times and was finally accepted by an average school. He didn’t accept any support from relatives, even my father’s Mp3 gift to help him learn English was declined. “I really don’t need it.” My cousin said, “Every night after other roommates go to bed, I would borrow one from them and listen to English in the bathroom. ” Saying this, my cousin still kept the genuine smile, which has never been diminished by any pressure, reality, the so-called destiny, because he has his dream to support him. Among so much compliment, he was most proud of grandpa’s simple and repetitive exclamation: “Our family has a doctor!” Seeing his face lightened as he was busy answering various questions about health from the folks, I realized how pressure and dream tied together to stimulate one’s development.

That familiar smile reminded me of the scene one day on a bus. Three job-hunting men got on the bus, talking and laughing happily, which instantly lit up the whole bus amid rainy nuisance. They soon struck up a conversation with the driver ahead and they had a hot discussion about what was the most money-saving way to stay overnight in a big city. I was not most impressed by their incredibly rich experience of staying in net bars, subway stations or even public bathrooms, but their smiles, their energetic and optimistic attitude. They talked about their little plan for the next city, next job, their little yet shining dream. And this dream gave them the courage and passion to combat life’s pressure.

Ladies and Gentlemen, it is pressure that keeps our life motivated and prolific. It is dream and passion that takes us through those frustrating hardships and loneliness. Not one less. Facing this fast changing and increasingly competitive world, let’s summon up our courage to burden and to dream!
