演讲稿:

Last winter vacation, my friend Helen went to Tanzania as a volunteer. She told me lots of people there are suffering from incurable diseases like HIV, and thousands of kids are thirsting for the chance to go to school. They seem to be in a different world, far away from us.

We can not deny, even in today’s technological advanced world, humanism, which means caring and respecting people ,is still the core of our human being, the motivation of developing our civilization.

Humanism and technology should be bonded together instead of being separated apart.  On one hand, humanism is the purpose or the motivation of developing technology. Since the idea of smart planet was put forward by IBM company, we have known that we are facing a smart era. Smart cars and smart phones are everywhere. Couple of days ago I watched a video about smart apartment which is very comfortable to live in. All these efforts share the same goal – achieving humanism, improving our living standard. On the other hand, the development of technology is the necessity for achieving humanism. As you can tell, people now go to hospitals and receive precise physical examinations and treatment instead of praying to God or other supernatural existence for a cure. The more precise physician can make operations, the higher probability patient can survive with. So in general, humanism indeed plays an essential role even in today’s technological world.

However, the far too advanced technology sometimes deprives our human rights which is a forceful aspect of humanism. The security check machine in Melbourne aroused heated discussion because it is so advanced that it is able to see through people. And passengers protested for the depriving of human rights. So the balance between the two will probably be our task in the coming days.

Distant as it sounds, humanism is an indispensable part of our society and our lives. It motivates, instructs and guards us to live in this technologically advanced and advancing world, and it will last long for any ages that human beings aspire after happy lives.
